Manual Lymph Drainage/ Complete Decongestive Therapy

Injury, inflammation or disease may cause swelling, or EDEMA, in the area. An excessive accumulation of fluid in the tissues may create tightness, tenderness or pain and restriction of motion. Manual Lymph Drainage assists with the movement of this excessive fluid by facilitating alternate pathways for drainage. Compressive bandaging follows MLD to help in the prevention of re-accumulation of this lymph fluid. Area specific exercises are performed to increase or maintain limb function and an individual exercise program is developed to maximize function. Patients are taught self-massage, skin care and self-bandaging and at the end of the course of treatment a custom measured garment is ordered of continued use by the patient. The length of treatment depends on the severity and duration of the lymphedema.

Functional Capacity Assessment

Functional Evaluation Testing is a process of identifying workers current safe capabilities.

Recent studies have recognized the negative relationship between time off from a work related injury and re-employability of the worker. A negative impact is felt upon the employer and employee, financially and on an interpersonal level.

A functional test is driven by the referral question. For example, a physician releases a worker to return to work. The injured worker disputes his ability to perform his critical job demands. Both the physician and the worker are estimating the performance ability. The worker and the employer are now at odds with one another. Functional testing, utilizing a combination of clinical and industrial products, peer reviewed literature and normative data through testing and observation will determine the workers current safe capabilities on a customized basis.

Additional return to work testing to name a few includes:

  • Pre-employment baseline testing,
  • Modified/Alternate Duties Testing
  • Ergonomic Modification Testing
  • Vocational Capacity Evaluation (Own Occupation or Any Occupation)
  • Short Term and Long Term determination capability
  • Impairment Rating

Pond Place Physical Therapy is proud to use Hanoun Functional Evaluation Equipment; a computer based functional testing system. This system uses the most advanced electronics, software and protocols to produce reliable, objective data to summarize functional findings in an easy to read format for practitioners and payers. Work Conditioning Program

The Work Conditioning program is appropriate for persons having sustained musculoskeletal injuries and would benefit from a comprehensive flexibility, strengthening and educational program for the injured area as well as the corresponding muscle groups. Focus will be placed on improving overall functional ability for work and home.

The program consists of a modified functional capacity assessment to establish safe functional capacity levels. The program includes a two week program encompassing static and dynamic lift tasks and cardiovascular conditioning. These evaluative tools objectively measure progress of the program and indicate changes in strength, as well as identifying when the participant is exerting maximal effort. A comprehensive report complete with objective (measurable) and subjective (non-measureable) findings will be provided to the physician, insurer, and rehabilitation specialist who will determine if continuation of the program is warranted.

The Work Conditioning Program begins with instruction in appropriate warm-up and cool-down exercises. This is followed by an aggressive flexibility, strengthening, and endurance program.

Our program utilizes the latest types of conditioning equipment including:

  • Cybex Eagle Resistive Strengthening Equipment
  • Universal Weight Stations
  • Upper Body Ergometers
  • Stationary Cycles
  • Treadmills
  • Hanoun Functional ROM Work Set
  • Therapeutic Weights
  • Circuit Training of Functional Activities

The circuit training activities included with this program are job and non job specific, involving basic lifting, pushing/pulling, and carrying activities. Basic educational programs will also be offered through our computerized software packages for back care and maintenance, stress reduction, and diet/weight control nutrition package. A typical treatment schedule runs five times per week over a two to four week period. These sessions will initially last approximately two hours and progress gradually to four hours per day. At or near the conclusion of the program, a Physical Performance Test will be performed to objectively determine the worker's level of improvement and current functional abilities.

The program requires a physician's order/approval prior to evaluation or treatment. The program is set and and monitored by a physical therapist, exercise physiologist and/or physical therapy aide with frequent interaction planning and upgrading of the program between all team members. There will be continual communication and care management throughout the program. Thorough daily progress notes will be kept in client's records.
